Expert Tips for Cleaning and Sterilizing the Home from Corona

Personal hygiene, as well as regular cleaning of the house, are the necessities that ensure the good health of human beings. Frequent hand washing is essential to prevent the spread of microorganisms (also known as microbes or germs) that cause many common illnesses. Regular cleaning of surfaces in the home also removes dirt and food particles on which germs can grow.

But what are the appropriate detergents to clean each surface or piece in the house separately, as it is known that what works for carpets is not suitable for sinks or computer keyboards? Here are WebMD's best and most convenient ways to keep your home clean and the good health of its residents:

1- The new coronavirus

Natural products such as vinegar or tea tree oil are not suitable for killing coronaviruses, but strong disinfectants must be used in these proportions:

• a bleach solution with a concentration of 4 teaspoons of bleach in a quart of water

• red alcohol or wet wipes containing an alcohol concentration of 70% or more

• Hand sanitizers that contain at least 60% alcohol concentration

• Soap and water, taking into account that washing hands takes at least 20 seconds

• Hydrogen peroxide

Any of the above cleaning methods are soaked on the surfaces to be cleaned for 30 seconds or more before wiping, noting that the bleaching solution, such as Clorox, loses its strength after dilution over time, so experts advise mixing the bleach solution with water in quantities sufficient for one day's uses only.

2- Toilet sets

Some toilet seats have a reddish coating that is actually a pigment from a bacteria that thrives in damp places called Serratia marcescens. The germs cause infections of the urinary tract, respiratory system, and others. But you can clean the toilet or bathtub and get rid of these germs and bacteria easily with a brush and bleaching cleaner.

3- A stomach bug

When Norovirus or the so-called "stomach bug" appears in the house, it spreads easily, so door handles, toilet handles, and all other frequently touched surfaces must be cleaned and disinfected immediately. It should be noted that the stomach bug is not eliminated by using red alcohol, but by using a cleaning substance known as hydrogen peroxide or wipes moistened with ethyl alcohol. Soiled clothes should be washed with hot water and bleach if possible or strong disinfectant washing powders.

4- Pet waste

Experts recommend that you quickly put on gloves and start cleaning up any litter in homes where pets live before the mess dries up. Wet spots should be wiped with paper towels and as many solids collected as possible. And rubbing should be avoided, as it increases the depth of the mess. For further sterilization, water mixed with a little dishwashing liquid can be sprayed, and vinegar can be added to help neutralize the smell of ammonia. The area of the mess is then rinsed off and the steps can be repeated as needed. Experts recommend spraying an appropriate amount of baking soda after cleaning and rinsing and leaving it for the next day, then sucking it with a vacuum cleaner. But be aware that, according to some experts, the smell of vinegar may encourage the pet to identify that area as a place to eliminate.

5- Water spots

A fuzzy white stain on wood furniture means that moisture is trapped under the top surface, so it needs to dry quickly before it turns into black spots that go deeper into the wood's pores over time. The safest way to dry white rings is to use a hairdryer on low heat, blowing the air a few inches away, for a short period of time so it doesn't affect the shine of the furniture. Unlike a hairdryer, dry mayonnaise can be used as an alternative. You can put some mayonnaise on a cloth and gently massage the stain, or leave it for a few hours on the spot and then wipe it with a clean cloth.

6- Accumulated soap residue

A mixture of 1 tablespoon of baking soda and an equal amount of white vinegar and water can be used to remove stubborn mineral deposits. The mixture can be put into a sprayer and sprayed on sinks and shower cabins. Leave the mixture on for 15 minutes before rubbing and rinsing.

7- Electronics

When cleaning a smartphone, tablet, or laptop, the power should first be turned off and then the dust should be wiped off with a soft cloth. The electronic device can be disinfected with a cloth slightly dampened with 70% alcohol. Be careful not to get any wetness into any openings such as speakers and charger ports. No bleach, cleaning products, or any abrasives can be used as they will damage the screen and warp the hardware coating.

8- Grease residue in the oven

Warm soapy water cannot be used. Ammonia is safe for removing grease and dirt from either glass or stainless steel ovens. Follow up with a damp cloth after cleaning is complete. Vent hood filters can be cleaned in the dishwasher. Fat can also be removed using a mixture of ½ cup of hot water with one tablespoon of baking soda and baking soda. Vinegar can also remove sticky residue without the need for a lot of rubbing.
